Okta Attribute Values Do Not Update on the Slack User Profile

Lifecycle Management
Okta Integration Network
Okta Classic Engine
Okta Identity Engine

Overview

When an administrator enables provisioning and assigns users or groups to the Slack application, changing an attribute mapping does not automatically push the updated data to Slack. This occurs because attribute mapping changes require a manual sync or reassignment to trigger the update. Resolve this issue by temporarily disabling user creation and deactivation, reassigning the users, and forcing a synchronization.

Applies To

  • Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
  • Okta Classic Engine
  • Slack
  • Provisioning
  • Lifecycle Management

Cause

This issue occurs because changing an attribute mapping after users have already been assigned to the application does not automatically trigger a profile update in the downstream application.

Solution

How are Slack attribute values updated after a mapping change?

Update the Slack attribute values by temporarily disabling user creation and deactivation in the Okta Admin Console, reassigning the users, and performing a force sync.

  1. Navigate to Applications > Applications and select the Slack application.
  2. Select the Provisioning tab and choose To App.
  3. Select Edit.
  4. Clear the Create Users and Deactivate Users checkboxes, and leave the Update User Attributes checkbox selected.
  5. Select Save.
  6. Select the Assignments tab.
  7. Unassign a single user, and then reassign the user.

NOTE: If the user account is group-managed, convert it to an individually owned type without removing the user's group membership by following the steps in How to Convert an Existing User's App Assignment from Group-Owned to Individually-Owned Type without Removing User's Group Membership.

  1. Check the user's Slack profile to validate that the profile update synced.
  2. If the previous step is successful, unassign all users from Slack, wait a few minutes for the task to complete, and then reassign all users.
  3. Validate that the Slack profiles are updated properly.
  4. Select the Provisioning tab and choose To App.
  5. Select Edit.
  6. Select the Create Users and Deactivate Users checkboxes.
  7. Select Save.

How is a force sync performed to update the user profiles?

Manually initiate synchronization of user data between the Okta user profile and the application user profile by performing a force sync.

Perform a force sync by following the steps in How to Use the Force Sync Option.
