TomB.19464 (Customer) asked a question.

Garmin Watch not passing the Yes its me back to Okta Verify

I have been using my Garmin VivoActive 4 to answer Yes It's Me from the Okta Verify App. Last week it suddenly stopped working unless the Android phone (Pixel 7) is unlocked. I click on Yes It's Me on watch, the notification goes away on the watch but it stays active on the phone and never sends the response to Okta.

I have tried everything I can think of.

  • Reverted the Garmin Connect App back to the previous version
  • Checked to see if an Android update had happened and it had not
  • Checked to see if Okta Verify had and update and it had not
  • Checked all the permissions I can think of
  • Cleared the data for Okta Verify and re-enrolled
  • Uninstalled Okta Verify and re-installed
  • Made sure Screen Lock Confirmation is off in Okta Verify

Hi @TomB.19464 (Customer) , thank you for contacting Okta Community!

Currently, we do not support smart watches, and an app for them has not been implemented. This does not prevent you from enabling notifications to show up on your smart watch, but you will have to use the app on your phone to take some actions.

If you have a paid account, you can suggest it on the Okta Community page by going to the Community→ Ideas tab. Features suggested in our community are reviewed and can be voted on and commented on by other members. High popularity will increase the likelihood of it being picked up by the Product Team and implemented.

You can find more details here.

    Regards.

I am aware that you do not officially support smart watches. However, until a couple of weeks ago it worked so has something changed to not allow the response on the watch to be passed back to the Okta Verify app?

  • s0mj4 (s0mj4)

I am also having this problem as of a week or 2 ago (on an EPIX 2). It used to work just fine, and suddenly the reply on the watch just does nothing. It still works for a coworker with a Forerunner, so there's clearly something going on.

I would encourage you to work with Garmin to get to the bottom of it.

Same with me. I deleted the Okta app from my android and my company had to reset my Okta profile so I could revalidate. Since then I can accept "yes it's me" from my Garmin but nothing happens. I have to now go to my phone and not just accept but also use a fingerprint to validate. So... that's why it's borked on our watches.

@TomB.19464 (Customer)  @s0mj4 (s0mj4) I figured it out! (for me at least)

On my Okta desktop settings I removed my phone. The Okta app then asked me to reset the account (email & pw), and in the settings I had to turn OFF a setting for "screen lock" verification. Once I did it had my resign in again (email & pw) and... voila - works on my Garmin again!

I'm having the same issue with a 'new' Galaxy S21 phone, that I didn't have on my Galaxy S8 or Pixel 5. I suspect it's related to OS notification and lockscreen configurations with newer OS versions, and how more recent Okta Verify app versions interact with the OS.

If my phone is unlocked with the screen on, then 'yes it's me' works from my Garmin watch. If my phone's screen is off or is on the lockscreen (even with extended unlock enabled), it doesn't work. Extremely frustrating.

@xtpsu (xtpsu) , what kind of phone do you have? I tried what you listed, but I never found a "screen lock" verification option anywhere, in the Android app or in my Okta account on the web from my computer.

It probably isn't the lock screen see my response to the OP

  • xtpsu (xtpsu)

@86wqj (86wqj) My fix stopped working with 1-3 days after implemented. Now I'm in the same boat as you on a Samsung S22 - if unlocked the Garmin works, if not then it does not. Tried making the app's battery "unrestricted" (as that was a fix for some unrelated troubles) but nope.

    • u460z (u460z)

It's nearby device permissions. Samsung is very annoying and disables app permissions constantly.

  • s0mj4 (s0mj4)

I have been unable to get it to work at all (even with the phone unlocked).

Tried completely deleting the Okta app from my phone, and reinstalling/reprovisioning - no luck.

Where is the "in the settings I had to turn OFF a setting for "screen lock" verification" setting - I can't find it anywhere.

Okta: Could you please investigate this?
