Okta/AD link broken with deactivation

We currently have Okta sourced users linked to an exact AD object. Whenever we deactivate a user within Okta (sometimes only temporarily), it breaks the link between the Okta object and the AD object. When activating, is there any way to re-establish the link without having to create the object over again in Okta? Thanks for any and all information.
