Org2Org: map spoke's email to hub's username

I have setup Org2Org with user attributes mapped one-to-one between my two Okta instances, and it is working fine.

However, I need to map email in my spoke instance to login name in my hub. The Org2Org app profile mapping doesn't allow me to change the mapping for username, saying that the "Username is set by Okta Org2Org".

So I followed this link and then another link, saying that Username is "Configured in Sign On settings". I changed the Username attribute configured on the "Sign On settings" page to Email. Now in the Org2Org app "Assignment" tab I see errors for every one of my users:

I have not been able to find any more details about the error. Could you please help?

I found this post https://support.okta.com/help/s/question/0D50Z00008G7UoU/how-do-i-import-using-org2org-source-user-name?language=en_US, which seems to describe my use case, but I'm unable to change the username field in the Org2Org app profile mappings.
