User15868967166685036951 (Teranet, Inc.) asked a question.

Are additional accounts added through QR codes backed up for users?

If I choose to add additional accounts in Okta Verify by choosing "Add Account" and scanning a QR code is this information backed up to Okta? Local to the device?

For example, if a user loses a phone would accounts they have added persist when they sign back in on a new device? I couldn't find anything addressing this specific question in the documentation, my apologies if I have missed something.

Thanks,

Heath

  • Hello Heath,

My name is Andrei, I am an Okta Support Engineer and I will try to answer your question as clear as possible.

Okta Verify do not have a backup in cloud (the application just get linked to the tenant immediately after you enroll) and it relays on the local device for management of the accounts, that is why you can use only one device and if you delete the application you will lose anything in order to avoid a security issue, with a possible vulnerable device.

Add additional accounts in the sense adding new identities to okta verify app

-let's say you have two different okta accounts - you can use verify app, add those two accounts when you enroll in MFA per your org policies.

-when user lost the phone , okta admin need to reset the MFA which results users can re- enroll in their new devices.

-another option would be , enroll two or more different factors w.r.t. different devices : corp phone would be okta verify and personal phone would be sms factor ; do note that , you need to adjust your mfa policies accordingly.!

    Bhaskar,

Thank you for your response. I am asking in the sense of adding additional non-Okta account MFA.

For example, if I set up MFA for Google and Firefox accounts that are not Okta integrated. I scanned the QR Codes to add them under accounts in Okta Verify. If I were to lose access to my phone, set up a new phone, and reset the Okta MFA so the new phone is now enrolled would my other accounts still be present?

For example the app Authy is synchronized to the cloud. If I change devices all of my codes are saved. I am curious because I want to recommend this to users if it is indeed backed up.

I've attached a picture to this post showing the accounts in question.

    Regards,

    Heath
