Verify If a User Is Using Okta Telephony Vendor or Telephony Inline Hook for SMS or Call Authentication

Overview

This article presents how to verify if the end user is using Okta Telephony (Twilio or Telesign are Okta's Telephony Providers) or the Telephony Inline Hook (Bring Your Own Telephony (BYOT)) due to Okta's BYOT policy.

Applies To

  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
  • SMS/Voice/Phone

Solution

  1. Check Okta System Logs > expand the logs under System.
  2. Look for the information below: 
    Send second factor auth call
    SUCCESS
    OR
    Send second factor auth SMS
    SUCCESS

 

If Okta Telephony Vendor was used for SMS / CallIf the Telephony Inline Hook was used for SMS / Call
SMSProvider NameSMSProvider Name
CallProvider NameCallProvider Name

In this example, the Okta Telephony Provider "Telesign" was used for authentication.


Okta System Log Search:

  • debugContext.debugData.smsProvider eq "TELESIGN"
  • debugContext.debugData.smsProvider eq “TWILIO”

In this example, the Telephony Inline Hook "Twilio" was used for authentication.


Okta System Log Search:

  • debugContext.debugData.smsProvider eq "TELEPHONY_PROVIDER_HOOK"
