This article explains how to swap the Yubico One-Time Password (OTP) slots on a YubiKey for the touch-triggered OTP function. It also details how users can switch between using a short or long touch to trigger a one-time passcode.
- Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
- Yubikey One-Time Password (OTP)
A user may use the incorrect slot by mistake when authenticating with a YubiKey, resulting in a failed authentication.
The YubiKey can store two different configurations for its touch-triggered One-Time Passcode (OTP) functions, which are saved in "OTP Slots". A short touch (1.25 seconds) activates the configuration in slot 1, while a long touch (3.5 seconds) activates the configuration in slot 2. To prevent unauthorized changes, a user can set an access code for a protected slot. The OTP slots are independent of one another, and a user can program, delete, or overwrite the stored configuration.
To swap the slot 1 and slot 2 configurations, use one of the following methods:
YubiKey Manager
- Open YubiKey Manager.
- Open the Applications menu and select OTP.
- Click the Swap button between the Short Touch and Long Touch sections.
- The OTP slots will be swapped.
YubiKey Personalization Tool
- Open the YubiKey Personalization Tool.
- Click Settings from the top menu, then click Update Settings.
- Under Configuration Slot, click Configuration Slot 1.
- Click Swap.
