Okta User Activation Flow When the Activation Email Link Expires

Overview

Users can still complete the activation flow if the link in the activation email expires. On Okta Identity Engine (OIE), users can request a new activation email directly from the expired link page. On Okta Classic Engine, users encounter a token expiration error and must contact an administrator for a new link.

Solution

How do users complete the activation flow if the email link expires?

 

Request a new activation email from the expired link page and use the newly generated link to activate the account.

  1. When Okta creates a new user, the user receives a "Pending User Action" status and an activation email. If the user does not select the link within the configured validity period (seven days by default), Okta displays the following message: Your account activation link is no longer valid. Request a new activation email below.

  1. The user must select the Request activation email button to generate the following message: New activation link requested. If your information matches our records, you will receive a new activation link in your inbox soon.

  1. Okta sends a new email using the User Activation template. The user must open the email and select the link to activate the account.

 

NOTE: On Okta Classic Engine, users cannot request a new activation email if the initial link expires. Instead, Okta displays the following error message, and the user must contact an administrator:

 

Token Expired
Your account activation token is no longer valid. This can happen if you clicked your activation link after creating your account, your activation link expired, or the URL is incorrect. Please contact your administrator to request a new token.
