This article discusses whether users can still complete the activation flow if the link in their activation email expires.
- Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
- User Activation
Users can still complete the activation flow if the link in their activation email expires.
- When a new user is created, they are set to a "Pending User Action" status and sent an activation email. If the link from this activation email is not used within the time it is set to be valid from the Okta settings (7 days by default), then the user will be faced with the message:
Your account activation link is no longer valid. Request a new activation email below.
- When the user clicks on the Request activation email button, they will see the following message:
New activation link requested. If your information matches our records, you will receive a new activation link in your inbox soon.
- An email will be sent to the user, in which they will be prompted to activate their account. The template of this email is User Activation. Once they click on that, they can activate the account accordingly, following the user activation email.
NOTE: On Okta Classic Engine, the user cannot request an activation email by themselves if the first one has expired. In this case, the user encounters the following error:
Token Expired
Your account activation token is no longer valid. This can happen if you clicked your activation link after creating your account, your activation link expired, or the URL is incorrect. Please contact your administrator to request a new token.
