Unable to Update the Slack Display Name in Okta

Overview
When attempting to update a Slack display name in Okta, the display name mapping from Okta to Slack appears as Create Only and cannot be changed. This occurs because the Allow display name update setting remains disabled in the Slack application provisioning integration settings. Resolve this issue by enabling the Allow display name update setting and configuring the display name in the user application profile or the Profile Editor.

Cause
The Allow display name update setting in the Provisioning tab under the Integration settings of the Slack application remains disabled. This prevents Okta from updating the display name in Slack. Review the disabled setting in the Slack application integration settings.
Solution
How is the Slack display name updated in Okta?
Enable the display name update setting in the Slack application provisioning integration settings to push the display name from Okta to Slack.
- Navigate to Applications > Applications in the Okta Admin Console and select the Slack application.
- Select the Provisioning tab and choose Integration in the Settings list.
- Select Edit.
- Select the Allow display name update checkbox.
- Select Save.
How is the display name added for users?
Add the display name for users by editing the user application profile or by mapping a value for the display name attribute in the Profile Editor.
- User application profile: Navigate to the Slack application integration, select the Assignments tab, locate the target user, and select the edit icon (pencil) next to the user name.
NOTE: If the attribute cannot be edited, a mapping exists for the attribute. - Profile Editor: Navigate to Directory > Profile Editor, locate the Slack user profile, select Mappings, and choose Configure User mappings. Select Okta User to Slack, locate the
displayNameattribute under the Slack user profile, and assign an attribute or expression to the left of it.
NOTE: The expression used in the image is an example. Adjust the expression as needed. Configure the ability for Slack users to change their username in the Slack workspace settings.
