Admins may encounter an issue with being unable to update Slack Display names; the display name mapping from Okta > Slack will be set to Create Only and cannot be changed.

This is due to the Allow display name update setting in the Provisioning tab under the Integration settings of the Slack application being unchecked, as shown below:

In order to be able to push Display Name from Okta to Slack, first, Admins must ensure that "Allow display name update" is enabled under Provisioning > Integration. To do this:

1. Navigate to the Provisioning tab under the Integration settings of the Slack application.
2. Edit the API Integration settings.
3. Check the box labeled Allow display name update.
4. Click Save.

Okta Admins can also add the display name for users in two ways:

1. In the user's application profile. Go to the Slack application integration, click on the Assignments tab, find the user for whom Admins want to add/change the value, and click edit (the small pencil icon to the right of the user name).

NOTE: if the attribute can not be edited, it's because there is a mapping in place for the attribute.

By mapping a value/expression for the displayName attribute in the Slack mappings. For that, go to Directory > Profile Editor, find the Slack user profile, click on Mappings, and select Configure User mappings. Select Okta User to Slack, find the displayName attribute on the right side under Slack User Profile, and assign an attribute /expression to the left of it.

  

NOTE: The expression that is used above is only an example. Please adjust as needed. Allowing Slack users the ability to change their username is set up in Slack's Workspace settings.
