How to Create a Password Policy

This article details how to create a Password Policy in the Okta Identity Engine and the Okta Classic Engine.

Okta Identity Engine

  1. In the Okta Admin Console, navigate to Security > Authenticators.
  2. Click on the Actions button adjacent to the Password factor, then from the dropdown, click on Edit.
  3. Click on Add New Password Policy.
  4. Provide a Policy name and add the groups that need to be in the scope of the policy.
  5. Select the appropriate Authentication Providers from the drop-down (for example, Okta, Active Directory, LDAP).
  6. Define the Policy and click on Create Policy.
  7. Provide a Rule Name and a list of users excluded from the rule.
  8. Define the users' ability to change passwords, perform self-service password resets, and unlock accounts.
  9. Click on Create Rule.

 

Okta Classic Engine

  1. In the Okta Admin Console, navigate to Security > Authentication.
  2. Click on Add New Password Policy.
  3. Provide a Policy name and add the groups that need to be in the scope of the policy.
  4. Select the appropriate Authentication Providers from the dropdown (for example, Okta, Active Directory, LDAP).
  5. Define the Policy and click on Create Policy.
  6. Provide a Rule Name and a list of users excluded from the rule.
  7. Define the users' ability to change the password, perform self-service password reset, and perform self-service account unlock.
  8. Click on Create Rule.
