How to Assign a Password Policy to a Specific Group

Overview

This article describes how to assign a Password Policy to a specific group.

Solution

To assign a specific group to a password policy, follow these steps:
 

  • For Okta Identity Engine:
    1. Log in to the Admin Dashboard and navigate to Security.
    2. Select Authenticators, then navigate to Password.
    3. On the right side of the Password option, select Actions, then click Edit.

    1. Once selected, the Password Policies will show.

 

  • For Okta Classic Engine: 
    1. Log in to the Admin Dashboard and navigate to Security.
    2. Select the Security tab, and click Authentication.
    3. Once selected, the Password Policies will show.

The next steps apply to both Okta Identity Engine and Classic versions of Okta

  1. From here, all the Password Policies created on the tenant will show (if the only policy is the default policy, then please use the guide listed in the related references below on creating a Password Policy).
  2. Navigate to the Password Policy where the group will need to be added, and select Edit.
  3. The password policy will pop up. Under the Add Group field, add all the groups that need to be applied to that password policy.
  4. Select the group, then click on the Save button.
  5. Once this is done, the users will respond to the new password policy after a password reset.


NOTE: Once the new password policy is applied, the user will need to perform a password reset. Password resets can be made by an Admin or by the old password policy.
