Receiving access denied error for SharePoint smart link

Hello,

Our SharePoint online smart links have suddenly stopped working and receiving following error:

Your organization's security policy doesn't allow you to use this legacy authentication method. For help contact your IT department.

Any suggestions?

  • Hi @AseemS.76786 (Customer) , Thank you for reaching out to the Okta Community!

The issue seems to be boiling down to your authentication policies.

Depending where and what at what step of the authentication you are seeing that message, you will need to check the with your team to confirm if the Microsoft Conditional Access policies or the Okta Authentication Policies have been changed.

For the Okta side of things, you can check the Okta System Logs to see what policy might be hit by the users.

If my answer helped, remember to mark it as best to increase its visibility for other members of the Okta Community who might have the same questions as you.

    Hope my answer helps!

What type of integration does this involve? Is your Microsoft tenant is federated with okta?

Hi Mihai, it had been working for years and suddenly stopped working yesterday. We haven't made any changes.

  • RohitU.50441 (Trevonix)

@AseemS.76786 (Customer) was this working before and recently (a week back) stopped working?

If that is true, Microsoft few days back deprecated basic Authentication of SharePoint. This might have affected the bookmark solution as well.

    • AseemS.76786 (Customer)

Correct, it has been working for few year and suddenly stopped working yesterday. We didn't make any changes.

  • Hi @AseemS.76786 (Customer) I've checked for similar reports and it seems that due to changes on the Microsoft side, if you had your links configured as per this article , it won't work anymore.

According to what my colleagues form the support side were saying, there might be a workaround:

Part 1: Configure Microsoft Entra ID

    1. Log in to the Microsoft Entra Admin Center.
    2. Navigate to Identity > Applications > Enterprise applications.
    3. Click + New application > + Create your own application.
    4. Name the app (e.g., "Sharepoint site"), select Integrate any other application... (Non-gallery), and click Create.
    5. In the new app's menu, go to Single sign-on and select the Linked method.
    6. In the Sign on URL field, enter your final destination URL "https://YOURDOMAIN.sharepoint.com/_forms/default.aspx?ReturnUrl=DESIREDLANDINGPAGE" and click Save.
    7. In the app's menu, go to Properties and copy the User access URL.
    8. Go to Users and groups and assign the necessary users/groups to the application.

    Part 2: Configure Okta

    1. Log in to your Okta Admin Console.
    2. Navigate to Applications > Applications.
    3. Click Browse App Catalog and search for Bookmark App.
    4. Select it and click Add Integration.
    5. On the General Settings page:
      • Application label: Give it a user-facing name (e.g., My Microsoft apps).
    1. URL: Paste the User access URL from Entra ID and append &domain_hint=yourcompany.com to the end.
    1. Click Done.
    2. Go to the Assignments tab and assign the bookmark to the same users/groups.

I might take some time to confirm all the details and have an article posted on the subject.

In the meantime, give that a try and if needed, please open a case to work with the Okta Support team directly.

    Regards.

One question, if we have multiple pages, will we need to create a separate application for each one?
