App suddenly showing Gmail inbox rather than signing in

Hello, this is a new issue that's happened to several users in the last 2 days.

It's been working for two years before this.

When users try to "Sign in with Google" instead of authenticating, the authentication window just opens their inbox in a loop.

Here's a video of what I mean: [REDACTED by Moderator]

Step by step what happens

  1. A User tries to sign into an app such as the Gmail app or Slack
  2. They enter their work email address
  3. they are redirected to the Okta sign-on
  4. They successfully authenticate with Okta
  5. Instead of signing into the app, the sign in window just shows their inbox

Step 1) Open the app

Step 2) Redirect to Okta Auth

Step 3) Successful Authentication shows Gmail inbox rather than authenticating the app

It says the moderator redacted the images... there was nothing sensitive in them, but here they are blurred out.

  • Hi @BenS.17702 (Customer) , Thank you for reaching out to the Okta Community!

I haven't been able to locate any similar reports so far, which would indicate this is not a global issue, but I checked the Okta Release Notes for any indication that there might have been a change in the Okta configuration pertaining to the Authentication flow. There does not seem to be anything that would impact your specific login flow.

Given that it passes authentication through Google SSO via Okta as the IDP, I would check to see if there was any configuration change to the your Google app in Okta by any of your colleagues that might have access to it.

You can check the Okta System Logs by running a query for

target.id eq "<appID>" and target.type eq "AppInstance" and eventType eq "application.lifecycle.update"

*where "appID" would be something like "0oa123asfasf123" - you can get the ID from your Okta Admin Dashboard > Applications > Google Workspace - check the Browser URL.

Beyond that, I would also check on the Google support side for any similar reports.

If you cannot identify anything there, and if you have an account with us and are a SuperAdmin/Case Admin, please open a case to work with my colleagues from the Support Team to investigate this further. They'll be able to access additional tools and resources to help you get to the bottom of it.

If my answer helped, remember to mark it as best to increase its visibility for other members of the Okta Community who might have the same questions as you.

    Hope my answer helps!
