MatthewH.10249 (State of Iowa) asked a question.

Why would a deviceFingerprint be different for same device for same user?

Why does it seem that the "deviceFingerprint" for the same iPhone for the same user looks different when looking at Okta logs for MFA verification vs password authentication?

Hi @MatthewH.10249 (State of Iowa) , Thank you for reaching out to the Okta Community!

I tested with an Android device and asked one of my colleagues that uses an iPhone and we could not reproduce this. The deviceFingerprint remained the same throughout the login flow.

That being said, there are multiple device variables that go into defining the deviceFingeprint, so it's not inconceivable for one to change during the login flow, although that would seem unlikely.

If you can reliably reproduce this behaviour or it poses concern, I recommend opening a case to have my colleagues from the Support Team investigate the matter.

If my answer helped, remember to mark it as best to increase its visibility for other members of the Okta Community who might have the same questions as you.

    Hope my answer helps!
