Reset MFA for Okta Developer Account - New Phone

I setup an Okta developer account earlier this year and don't remember having to setup MFA (could be wrong though). I got a new phone and thought I transferred over all of my MFA accounts, but it looks like the MFA for my Okta developer account didn't get transferred over and now I can't login to my Okta developer account. Checking online it said to reach out the the support email, but that doesn't work anymore. I need help signing into my developer account using the [redacted by moderator] URL. How can I get my MFA reset? Thanks.

How do I go about getting actual developer support to resolve this issue? This is ridiculous. I've followed the vague guidelines that I've been able to find and I now just have to hope that someone "might" be able to help me...???

  • Hello @3ta4l (3ta4l) Thank you for posting on our Community page!

In alignment with the Okta Secure Identity Commitment, Okta is requiring customers to use multifactor authentication (MFA) to access their Okta Admin Console. MFA is an effective tool to protect against identity attacks.

We are in the process of rolling this out and you should expect that this will be completed in Q4.

The MFA will be required on all orgs and no admins will be exempt.

We recommend reviewing the Frequently Asked Questions article on this subject. If you have a production account with us, please leverage it to open a case via the support.okta.com site or call the support line so our colleagues can investigate and confirm if the issue is related.

If for whatever reason those options are not available for you, please contact your Okta Account Executive or Customer Success Manager, and they will be able to engage the Support team on your behalf. If no paid developer or production account is available, the only option left is to sign up for a new free trial or developer account.

Thank you for reaching out to our Community and have a great day!

Hi @Paul Stiniguta (Employee) , thanks, I understand that and I'm fine with that. However, I have a developer account and I can no longer log in to it since MFA is enabled and I don't have a way to generate a code to be able to sign in. I need the MFA for my developer account reset so that I can get MFA set back up correctly. In searching online, prior to posting, a number of the posts I found said to email support@okta.com, which I did. I got the following reply:

      Hi,

In order to better serve our customers, this email address is no longer being used for new case submission.

To get help with Okta, please use one of the following resources:

We look forward to helping you,

      Okta Support Team

The Okta Help Center led me to send the email in the first place. If I try to open a case (since I'm the Okta Administrator for my dev account), it says I don't have access (it's probably getting confused with our company Okta...??? Or your new support process doesn't work for Okta developer accounts), so I posted to the community. @Paul Stiniguta (Employee) , hopefully you can reach out to someone internally and have them reset my MFA so that I can get back into my Okta developer account. Thanks.

      • Hello @3ta4l (3ta4l)

Free trial account/Developer credentials/MFA cannot be accessed by anyone outside of the primary account administrator. Therefore, Okta is unable to access or reset your username and password or MFA.

You may, however, create a new free trial/Developer account. We encourage you to save the credentials to ensure access in the future.

Also please note that if you have a Paid Service with Okta, you can open a case with support for additional assistance.

Ugh, thanks @paul.stiniguta1.508386743840768E12 (Okta, Inc.). Based on what you said, it looks like MFA might have been enabled on my dev account after I set it up, by Okta, therefore locking me out of my account. I'm pretty sure I transferred over all of my Okta MFA settings when I got my new phone. I did find the article you mentioned and it indicated that those settings should have been rolled out back in August (maybe that was only for non-dev/production accounts, it doesn't say). Either way, it looks like that's probably the cause of me not being able to sign in now. I guess I'll just have to create a new account. Terrible dev experience if you ask me, but thanks for the information and quick response Paul.
