Google Authenticator crashed and deleted all previously linked accounts for OTP

Hello there,

I had previously set up the google authenticator for accounts that required it. However, some weeks ago, my google authenticator crashed and all previously linked accounts were deleted. I am now unable to retrieve them and also unable to reset my authenticator preference due to the need to input the codes before I can edit anything. Is there anything that I can do at this point to recover my accounts?

Thanks,

Emily

Hi @ulyuy (ulyuy) , thank you for contacting Okta Community.

An MFA reset may help you re-enroll and set up the accounts again, one by one. Unfortunately, the lost OTP accounts are likely not recoverable.

If you are an Okta org user and are locked out of your account, please contact your company's Help desk or IT support team. They can review your profile and help you manage your MFA.

If you are the Super Admin of an Okta org and are locked out of your account, please email us at community@okta.com for an MFA reset. Include the org's URL and the email address of the Super Admin account.

    Regards.

  • Unfortunately, once the app crashes and linked accounts are deleted, there's no way to recover the codes directly from the app. However, you can still regain access to your accounts by contacting the support teams of each service you had linked. They can usually help you verify your identity and reset your authentication preferences. If you saved any backup codes during the initial setup, those can also be used to recover access. Additionally, check if the accounts offer alternative recovery methods like SMS authentication or email verification. For future protection, you might consider using an authenticator app that offers backup and sync features or securely storing backup codes.

    Hope this helps!
