Thanks again, @Mihai Negoita - Okta (Okta, Inc.)​ ! You have been answering all my questions - I really appreciate it. I have one big question I have been researching and can't seem to figure out. Does SSO happen implicitly from the webapp's perspective? If I have saml apps that work together with SSO, can I add my oidc app to those apps' SSO? I don't know if I'll need special code to handle sessions/cookies/whatever or if okta creates a session and handles all of it for me.

Unfortunately, I'm not the appropriate resource to discuss OIDC implementation with.  

AFAIK in terms of SSO, depending on what the apps supports, it's either SAML or OIDC, not both or OIDC to connect to your SAML apps. 

You can check our dedicated Developer Forum ( devforum.okta.com ) to see if you can get a more appropriate answer there or perhaps you can open a case to discuss this with one of our Support Engineers, that way you can share details about your intended implementation that you otherwise could not share on a public forum.
