dmhb6 (dmhb6) asked a question.

Chrome plug in for Okta is requesting reinstall even though already installed

Hi All

This week many of my Okta users are reporting that although they have installed the Okta browser plugin, after about 30 seconds it requests them to reinstall even though it remains active in the extension page.

I tried to replicate steps outside my org and noticed that the plugin read/write permissions were defaulted to 'This site can read and change site data'>'when you click the Extension' - this does not work (theoretically it should). I set the permission to allow all sites access and it worked. Some of my users don't have this option.

I have noticed there have been a few Chrome updates of late but not sure if this is the issue.

MS Edge does not have this issue, but educating my users to move over to that browser is not feasible.

So my questions are:

  • Is there a known bug in the Chrome Okta plugin?
  • Has anyone else experienced this issue?
  • Has there been a change in Okta that could affect this?
  • Is there a work around for this?

TIA

Allison

    Hey Allison,

Rares here from Okta Support! Thank you for contacting us!

At this time there is no reported issue with the same behaviour as in your case related to the Okta Browser Plugin and this could be related to recent Google Chromium logic changes such as as MV2 EOL.

Is there any difference between your Chrome browser version and the one that end users are using? Also, does de deployment of the Browser Plugin is being done through GPO, or manually by the end users?

There was no changes on the Okta side that could lead into this, we assume that if this was any changes from our side would have impacted other customers as well with the same issue.

There will be a new release of the Okta Browser Plugin Version at the beginning of the next month. I would recommend to check the above steps and open a new case with us so we can investigate further.

    Best regards,

We too are experiencing this issue but for us it is in both Edge and Chrome. i assume that is because Chrome adopted a change to Chromium that later MS did in Edge but that is just supposition on my part.

The addon always works if i click on it and launch a tile from there. But if on the actual okta page often times i will get an error saying the addon needs to be installed. If i disable the addon and then close out of the browser and reeable about 95% of the time that fixes it but not everytime.

    Any help is appreciated

    regards,

    Phil

We are having this issue with Chrome, but I have not seen it in MSEdge thus far.

    hi guys,

I know it's been a while but we're still experiencing this issue as well for some users. Is there an update for the plugin already or a workaround yet?

  • dmhb6 (dmhb6)

Hi Mari, we have just started having the issue again. We eventually worked out it was to do with the users browser permissions/privacy for that site. But Okta have released a new version of the extension 30 Nov and now we are back to square one. Very frustrating.

  • A colleague of mine had an open Okta ticket for quite a while about this matter, but never did receive a reply for resolve. At times I am caught in the 'Install Okta Plugin' loop in Chrome, even with the plugin already installed. My work around has been to reset the Okta plugin in Chrome's settings, close and reopen the Chrome browser. I have helped many staff and we are lucky most are patient.

We are also having this issue with chrome, the latest browser version and Okta version. The plug in will request install despite being installed already. We will be testing on Edge As this issue is still being experienced by a number of users it would seems that Okta should be providing a resolution here.

this is a recurring issue for our team as well. is there any resolution?
