Receiving multiple unknown user failures using authn endpoint with no details

I have a test user that creates multiple auth requests per minute. I have been increasingly seeing failed login events with the message. This is using the /api/v1/authn endpoint. 

 

User login to Okta

failure: UNKNOWN_USER

 

There are no other error codes or information provided in these requests so troubleshooting is very difficult.

    Hard to say what is causing this without more context for your use case but typically, this error is generated when dealing when trying to import users from the AD using the AD agent(system.agent.ad.import_user), another case is when trying to import users from a CSV file (system.csv.import_user) or for example in some cases with Dekstop SSO integration, please see this example: https://support.okta.com/help/s/article/Desktop-SSO-IWA-is-failing-with-LoginResult-UNKNOWN-USER?language=en_US

    Basically, the error event is fired when Okta is not able to identify the user in the source directory.
