Unable to login without resetting password

Not sure if this is the right spot to get support, but I don't see a way to open a support ticket. Whenever I try to sign in on the main Okta page (prior to the 2 factor push notification on Okta Verify) in my browser, Chrome on Mac, I get met with the generic "Unable to sign in" error. When looking at the underlying API call error it is:

message: "Authentication failed", i18n: {key: "errors.E0000004"}, class: "ERROR"

On the admin console, the admins are unable to see any failed sign on attempts. I am able to reset my password, but I can only get in if I don't click the link in the email and instead type the verification code into the browser which will result in a login immediately after and then I can do the push notification and get in. If I try to click the email link, after I change the password it prompts me to login and I get the same error. I am able to get in after resetting through the email link only when it is done from the admin console.

I have tried incognito mode, different browser, clearing all cache & cookies etc. When I get an admin to reset me it stops doing it for a few days, but whenever I reset myself it happens every single day. There is no indication that the account should be getting locked due to someone sending a bunch of invalid login attempts or otherwise.

    Hi @wc2oa (wc2oa),

Thank you for posting on the Okta community page!

I have done some research but I wasn't able to find a specific resolution to the behaviour that you are encountering, therefore I would recommend to check the Sing On policies along with the Password policies to make sure that they are set up correctly for your account.

Hi Flaviu! Thanks for the response. I have had our admins look at my account and they didn't see anything configured any differently for my account vs any of the others at our company and no one else in our org has experienced what I am seeing unfortunately 😞

interesting one, never seen that before. Ryan are you OKTA sourced user ?

  • wc2oa (wc2oa)

I'm not sure what that means, so probably not? Do you mean like using Okta sourced from LDAP/Active Directory? We're just using the standard cloud offering.
