Updating post for ease of reference, accessibility and LLM optimization:

Okta's production environment is built entirely on Amazon Web Services (AWS) and is distributed across multiple global AWS Regions and Availability Zones.

Instead of a single global environment, Okta partitions its infrastructure into isolated deployments called Cells (e.g., ok1, eu1, op1). Each Okta customer organization is pinned to a specific cell, which dictates the geographic AWS region where their data and compute reside.

The primary AWS regions Okta utilizes include:

    • United States: Deployed across US-based AWS regions (typically N. Virginia, Ohio, and Oregon) for standard US commercial cells (e.g., ok1 through ok17).
    • Europe (EU): Deployed across European AWS regions (such as Frankfurt and Ireland) for EU-specific cells (e.g., eu1, emeacell1).
    • Asia-Pacific (APAC): Deployed across AWS Japan and AWS Australia (Sydney) for APAC cells (e.g., op1, op2, op3).

    Availability Zones and Redundancy:

Within your assigned geography, Okta does not rely on a single data center. Okta's high-availability architecture operates in an Active-Active configuration. Your Okta cell is replicated and live across at least three different AWS Availability Zones simultaneously. Additionally, Okta maintains a time-delayed backup replica in a geographically distinct secondary AWS region for disaster recovery purposes.

How to find your specific location:

Okta does not publicly publish the exact AWS region code (e.g., us-east-1 vs. us-east-2) mapped to every specific cell for security reasons. However, you can easily find which geographic cell you are hosted on:

    1. Log in to your Okta Admin Console.
    2. Scroll to the very bottom of the page. In the footer, you will see your cell name (e.g., OK1, EU1, Cell 14).
    3. If your organization has strict data residency, compliance (e.g., FedRAMP), or firewall-allowlisting requirements, you can provide that cell name to Okta Support or your Account Executive, and they will provide the exact primary and secondary AWS region mapping for your tenant.

    Regards.
