Using Okta with Thunderbird

I have an issue similar to others already reported but not resolved:

In my case it is a company email using Outlook 365 and I was wondering if Okta has been tested and confirmed working with Thunderbird?

Many thanks,

M

  • Hello @3jr2b (3jr2b),

    Thanks for posting.

Based on multiple support Tickets that I reviewed, Thunderbird and Okta are now able to work together.

Here are some insights that add value to this:

"I tested the app through a SAML 2.0 based G Suite account and it worked perfectly so I do not think there shouldn't be any problems with that. I have to say that the account that I used is a new one, to be sure I got nothing configured differently there. So yes, it should work just fine, but you are going to need the Okta password in order to log in if you are using the G Suite account there in Thunderbird."Some time ago it was not easy since Thunderbird used old authentication as IMAP and this was not supported, however, Nowadays Thunderbird supports OAuth2 modern authentication which works fine with Okta. https://help.okta.com/en/prod/Content/Topics/Apps/Office365/best-practices-sign-on-policies.htm

How to configure Thunderbird for Office365:

Please let us know if this helps you or if you need additional assistance.

Thanks @User16254393570754125507 (Okta)! I tried various options, but although I managed to get Okta to verify in Thunderbird, there were some server issues - probably something iffy on Outlook's end. However, I did manage to solve it (or so it would seem) by selecting "Exchange/Office365" when setting up the account (creating a new email account -> add name, email and password, let Thunderbird search for settings). This requires the installation of the add-on Owl (https://www.beonex.com/owl/) which, if it keeps working, would be well worth the €10 per year it costs.

It could be that it is possible to set it up as IMAP etc. without having to use Owl, but doing so does not seem to be cost effective.

    Cheers and thanks again!

    /Martin
