Slack integration and admin role

I'm trying to integrate my org's Slack by Okta App template.

Slack requires Okta login at last step while I follow https://saml-doc.okta.com/SAML_Docs/How-to-Configure-SAML-2.0-for-Slack.html

According to Slack's answer, it has to be Okta admin account.

Here's the questions:

  1. Do I have to login to Okta by administrator's account?
  2. Do I have to keep admin previleges with that account? I'm asking this for.. if it's not necessary, I will remove admin previleges after I complete integration process.

Thank you for your advice!

  • Hi @User16297709969445808421 (Customer)

That is correct, on Step 7 it is necessary to access using the Admin account.

If you provided admin settings to this account just for the Slack integration and you don't need it later you can remove the admin rights once the integration is complete.

    Hope this helps.

  • Hello @User16297709969445808421 (Customer)

Thanks for bringing your inquiry to our attention

Based on the document you used for the process, on step 4 it requests to access Okta using an Admin account to complete the process on Okta side. As well will be at the last step.

You should mark the "Sign in with Okta" option and that should be done with the integration.

Please notice, that these steps are to complete the integration process, but the Slack app is not yet assigned to any users, in order to do this please follow this document https://help.okta.com/en/prod/Content/Topics/users-groups-profiles/usgp-assign-apps.htm

It can also be done from the Applications > Applications > Slack > Assignments > Here you choose whether assign it to individual or groups.

Once it is assigned, it is no longer necessary to login with an Admin Account. The Slack app should be available on the users dashboard.

Please notice, it is always necessary to have at least one Super Admin Account on Okta side, so be careful when removing administrator rights.

Let me know if this helps and if you have further questions.

  • Hi Daniela.

There's some misunderstanding... I meant step 7, not step 4.

(of course I generate required values and paste it to Slack on step 4. 🙂

On step 7, Slack requires login to Okta and Slack engineers tell me 'you must login to Okta by admin account on step 7' ... is it true??
