lxltz (lxltz) asked a question.

What is the second IPChain information in System Logs referring to?

When looking at system logs for user authentications or authentication attempts, I am seeing two IPChain values with geographical locations. The first matches the geographical context and location fields listed elsewhere in the logs. However the second IPChain location does not. Is that the location of an OKTA data center or of some cloud service in use?

  • Hey Kyle!

If the incoming request to Okta passes through any proxies, the IP addresses of those proxies will be stored in the ipChain in the format (clientIp, proxy1, proxy2, ...). This is useful when working with trusted proxies.

So if you see multiple IP addresses, it means we detected proxy IP addresses during the request.
