How do I resolve the error: Could not create new user. 409 - User with the specified login already exists.
I'm getting the following error when provisioning a user to Box:

An error occurred while assigning this app. Automatic provisioning of user John Smith to app Box failed: Could not create new user. 409 - User with the specified login already exists.

How can I resolve this?

  • The Box 409 error typically indicates the user cannot be provisioned to your Box account as they are already managed within another Box tenant.  To resolve this issue, you can either send he user an invitation from your Box tenant to join your organization, or contact Box technical support and request they move the user to be managed under your Box tenant.  Once this is complete, you can retry the provisioning task.  If you have further issues, please contact the Okta Technical Support team.

Something I have also found with this error, we have had a few people, mainly freelances who have come and gone and then come back. Though we disable the account within Active Directory which also suspends their OKTA Account, it only marks their Box Account as inactive and if the account is inactive OKTA also cannot provision it. In this instace you need to (within the Box Admin Console) activate the account again and then allow Box to import to OKTA and then link them in the Imported Users Section.
