Downloading the Okta Browser Plugin

Overview

To really boost your productivity, you need an SSO experience that’s quick, responsive, and intuitive. That’s where the Okta Browser Plugin comes in.

The Okta Plugin is a convenient browser extension that is designed with the end user in mind while empowering admins with the best-in-class SSO security. The Okta Plugin equips you with a mini dashboard to access all your Okta applications quickly with a single click, freeing the user from having to remember all those passwords.

You can even quick-open the plugin using keyboard shortcut CMD + SHIFT + O on Mac, or ALT + O on Windows.

Considerations

The Okta Browser Plugin for Firefox and Internet Explorer can be downloaded directly in the Okta Dashboard. However, the plugin will only work with the most up-to-date version of Internet Explorer—in this case, IE 11.

Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge are supported, but you’ll be redirected to the Chrome Store or the Edge Store to start the installation.

The plugin will work with Safari, but only once the Okta Extension App is installed. Download this from the Mac App Store, then find it in your Applications folder or open it directly from the app window. Once the app is opened, a message should open in a separate window, telling you that the installation was successful. At that point, just click Open Safari and you can begin browsing with your new plugin.

Installation

Your browser will prompt you to install/update the Okta Browser Plugin upon logging into your Okta tenant if you have been assigned an application that requires it. The installation message will appear at the top of your Okta Dashboard. You may contact your company's Okta Administrator if this installation message does not appear on your Okta Dashboard.

To download the Okta Browser Plugin directly, navigate to the Mac, Chrome, or Edge app stores, depending upon which browser you would like to install the plugin on.

Once the installation is complete, you’ll notice the Okta logo in your web browser. Clicking that logo will open the browser plugin and enable you to search for or scroll to select the application that you’d like to open. When you select your application through the plugin, a new browser tab with the app’s URL will open. The plugin automatically applies your credentials and other necessary information to that page using an encrypted SSL connection, granting you access so you can get to work.
