Configuring a Custom Email Address for Branded Notifications

Overview

This article explains how to configure a custom email address for branded notifications so end users receive emails from a company-specific address rather than the default no-reply@okta.com. A custom email sender can be configured to display the company name or the application name for end-user transactions.

Applies To
  • Custom Email Domain
  • Branded Notifications
  • Admin Console
Solution

To configure a custom email address, follow these steps:

  1. In the Admin Console, go to Customizations > Brands, and then select the brand.
  2. In the Domains tab, locate the Email section and click Add domain.

NOTE: It is not necessary to create a new brand to create a Custom Email Domain. The custom email domain can be created under the default subdomain and replaces the default address once the configuration is completed.

Domains

  1. In the next session, there are 3 fields that need to be filled in:
    • Email address
    • Name of the email sender
    • Mail subdomain

NOTE: The above input values are cleared if switching to other tabs of the browser or other applications before clicking the Next button.

  1. In the Email address field, enter the custom email address. This email address appears in the emails sent to the end users. When the domain yourdomain.com is owned and multiple custom email domains are desired, use subdomains; otherwise, an error will be returned: Email domain already exists. This is to ensure that there are no conflicting DNS records.
An example would be noreply@example1.yourdomain.com. The next email domain to configure needs to have a different domain, for example, noreply@example2.yourdomain.com.

  2. In the Name of the email sender field, enter the sender's name. This name appears as the sender in the emails sent to users.

  3. In the Mail subdomain section, enter a unique value to ensure there are no conflicting Domain Name System (DNS) records. NOTE: The mail subdomain does not appear in emails sent to end users; it is used for the propagation of Canonical Name (CNAME) records in the DNS registrar.

  4. Update the DNS records using the provided values.

  5. After updating the DNS records through the domain provider, click Verify. NOTE: Polling may take up to 24 hours. The configuration remains pending until the DNS updates are detected.
