Expected Behavior After Adding a Custom Domain to an Okta Organization
Last Updated:
Overview
Adding a custom domain to an Okta organization automatically updates the URLs for several configured components, such as applications, identity providers, and authorization servers. Removing a custom domain resets the issuer mode of these components back to the default organization domain. Administrators must understand these expected behaviors to ensure proper configuration and routing within the Okta environment.

What is the expected behavior after adding a custom domain?
Review the following expected behaviors and configuration changes that occur when adding or removing a custom domain in an Okta organization.
- After adding a custom domain, several components configured in the organization, such as applications (including Application Programming Interface (API) service integrations), identity providers, and authorization servers, use this new custom domain in the URLs.
- Removing a custom domain resets the issuer mode of identity providers, authorization servers, and OpenID Connect (OIDC) applications back to the default organization domain.
- Returning from the Admin Console to the End-User Dashboard uses the custom domain in the URL when one is configured in the tenant.
- The
login_hintin the Help Center URL points to the custom domain. As a result, the Okta Support Center redirects to the custom domain for login. - Review the Update other Okta settings documentation for additional considerations after enabling the custom domain.
NOTE: Okta uses the default organization URL for all configured components if the organization has two or more custom domains. To maintain the default organization domain in URLs while using one custom domain, add a secondary custom domain to the tenant.
