Missing Export Account Option When Transferring Okta Verify to a New Device in Okta Classic Engine

Okta Classic Engine
Okta Verify

Overview

The seamless device-to-device transfer feature for Okta Verify requires Okta FastPass, which is exclusive to Okta Identity Engine (OIE). To resolve the missing Export Account option in Okta Classic Engine, administrators or users must reset the existing Okta Verify enrollment and set it up on the new device. When users upgrade to a new mobile device in an Okta Classic Engine organization, the Export Account option is missing from the Okta Verify application menu, and attempting to transfer data from a cloud backup or phone-to-phone migration fails.

Applies To

  • Okta Classic Engine
  • Okta Verify

Cause

The seamless device-to-device transfer feature and the corresponding Export Account button within the application require Okta FastPass, which is an exclusive feature of Okta Identity Engine (OIE). Because Okta Classic Engine organizations do not support Okta FastPass or native multi-device enrollment for the exact same user profile, the Okta Verify application intentionally hides the Export Account option for Okta Classic Engine accounts.

Solution

To use Okta Verify on a new device in an Okta Classic Engine organization, the existing Okta Verify enrollment must be completely reset before setting it up on the new device.

What steps reset the Okta Verify factor from the Okta End-User Dashboard?

Users with access to the old device or alternative backup authentication methods, such as Short Message Service (SMS), Voice Call, YubiKey, or Security Question, can reset the device pairing themselves by navigating to the Okta End-User Dashboard and removing the Okta Verify factor.

  1. Navigate to the Okta End-User Dashboard and sign in using a backup multifactor authentication (MFA) factor.
  2. Select the username in the top-right corner and choose Settings.
  3. Scroll to the Extra Verification section.
  4. Locate Okta Verify and select Remove.
  5. Select Set up next to Okta Verify and follow the on-screen prompts to scan the new Quick Response (QR) code with the new device.

The Okta Admin Console provides options to clear the Okta Verify factor.

If the user registered only the Okta Verify instance on the old device, an Okta Administrator must clear the factor from the Okta Admin Console to prompt the fresh enrollment wizard on the next login.

  1. Navigate to Directory and select People in the Okta Admin Console.
  2. Select the user profile.
  3. Select More Actions and choose Reset Multifactor.
  4. Select the Okta Verify factor to clear it.
  5. Instruct the user to sign in to prompt a fresh Okta Verify enrollment wizard to scan a new QR code on the new device.
