Troubleshooting Okta Verify Push Authentication Issues
Okta Classic Engine
Multi-Factor Authentication
Overview

Okta Verify Push notifications may fail to arrive, experience delivery delays, or cause slow logins after approval. These issues often stem from incorrect device time settings, network connectivity problems, or Virtual Private Network (VPN) interference. Resolve these issues by verifying device settings, ensuring a stable network connection, and checking for conflicting applications or VPN policies.

Applies To
  • Okta Classic Engine
  • Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
  • Okta Verify
  • Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA)
Cause

Okta Verify Push authentication failures typically occur due to incorrect device date and time settings, disabled background data usage, unstable network connections, or interference from VPN policies and custom security applications.

Solution

How are the Okta Verify Push authentication issues resolved?

Verify device settings and application configurations by following these steps if Okta Verify Push authentication fails, but the six-digit token functions correctly:

  • Confirm that the device date and time use the Network or Automatic setting.
  • Check if the Okta Verify application exists on both the work and personal profiles of the mobile device. If duplicate installations exist, remove the application from both profiles and reinstall it in the intended profile only.
  • Confirm that the Android device enables background data usage under the Okta Verify application settings.

Perform these additional troubleshooting steps to restore connectivity and remove interference if the previous adjustments fail to resolve the issue:

  1. Ensure a stable network or mobile data connection exists by opening the mobile browser and navigating to the organization's Okta website. Restart the network settings if the connection fails.
  2. Reboot the mobile device.
  3. Ensure the device operates without jailbreaking and lacks custom security layers or other applications that interfere with notification delivery.
  4. Check whether an active VPN connection exists on the mobile device, as specific VPN policies block incoming Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) requests for Okta Verify Push notifications.
