Overview

Custom user attributes can be included to specify supplementary user preferences. These attributes may be designated as required and utilized during the creation of a user's profile. This article explains how to make a custom user attribute required.

Solution

To make a custom attribute required for Okta users, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the Okta admin account.
  2. Go to the Directory menu and select Profile Editor.
  3. Find the custom attribute that will be required and click on the pencil icon next to it.
  4. In the Edit Window for the attribute, select the box next to Attribute Required.
  5. Click Save Attribute to save the changes.

NOTE: The Okta user profile consists of both base attributes and custom attributes. Among base attributes, only the First Name and Last Name fields can be set as required. To import users with empty First Name and Last Name attributes, these attributes must have the "Attribute Required" unchecked in Okta to prevent import failure.
