How to Sync the Manager Attribute Value from Okta to Slack
Okta Integration Network
Okta Classic Engine
Okta Identity Engine
Overview

There are instances where the manager attribute is not propagated to Slack regardless of whether a mapping exists from Okta to Slack.

Applies To
  • Okta Integration Network (OIN)
  • Slack
  • SCIM Provisioning
  • Universal Directory
Cause

The manager attribute may fail to sync with Slack due to an incorrect format, hindering synchronization. Furthermore, if the manager's profile does not exist in Slack, the attribute will not sync.

Solution

When providing the manager attribute, it is essential to also specify the managerId sub-attribute. The value for the managerId sub-attribute can consist of a valid Slack ID, primary email, or the userName attribute of the respective individual. Each request has the flexibility to utilize a different type of value for the managerId sub-attribute.

NOTE: The provided value should align with a user that currently exists within the Slack platform. It's crucial to ensure the accuracy and validity of the value by confirming its association with an active user account in Slack's user database. If certain attributes such as manager are blank in the Slack app assignment, then it can be overwritten in the Slack profile as blank.
