Administrators occasionally need to reset Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) for an end user. Resetting MFA allows the user to re-enroll in the required authentication factors during their next login.

Reset an authenticator for a specific user in Okta Identity Engine
- In the Okta Admin Console, navigate to Directory > People.
- Locate and click the specific user.
- Select More Actions in the top right area of the User Profile.
- Select Reset Authenticators.
- Choose which factors to reset from the list of factors that is displayed.
- Once reset, the user will be prompted to re-enroll in the MFA policy the next time they log in. There is no time limit on the user's ability to re-enroll.
NOTE: To reset all factors for multiple users in Okta Identity Engine, follow Reset User Factors in Bulk Using Rockstar and Postman.
Reset all factors for one or more users in the Okta Classic Engine
- In the Admin Console, go to Directory > People.
- Click Reset Multifactor.
- Select the users for whom the Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) should be reset.
- Click Reset Multifactor Authentication. A confirmation prompt appears. Click Reset to proceed. This action cannot be undone.
NOTE: This action resets all factors for the selected users. The users must set up all their factors again.
How does an administrator reset one or more factors for a single user in Okta Classic Engine?
NOTE: This action allows selecting and resetting any of the configured factors. The user must set up again only the factor that was reset.
- In the Admin Console, go to Directory > People.
- Click the user whose Multi-Factor Authentication they want to reset.
- Click More Actions > Reset Multifactor/Reset Authenticators.
- Select the factors that they want to reset and then click either Reset Selected Factors or Reset All (the Reset All option is only available for the Okta Classic Engine). A confirmation prompt appears. Click Reset to proceed. This action cannot be undone.
