ArsenyZ.84849 (Customer) asked a question.

Will enabling Sync Password update passwords for imported users?

I'm configuring Google Workspace App and provisioning.

We have a bunch of exiting users in Google whcih were already imported to Okta.

Now, I want to enable the Okta to App provisioning, but not sure about the "Sync Password" feature:

  • a Google user has its own password
  • the same Okta user has another password for Okta
  • the user was imported from Google and assigned as "Matched" to the Google Workspace App

Now, when I'll enable the Okta to App provisioning with the "Sync Password" - will user be able to log in to Google with its old Google's password, or will Okta override Google's current password with the Okta's password?

Hi @ArsenyZ.84849 (Customer) , Thank you for reaching out to the Okta Community!

If you don't use SSO, just the Provisioning features, then yes, the Sync Password feature would override the users password.

That being said, if you have a full Google Workspace integration implemented with SAML SSO and all, passwords no longer come into play for Google. All authentication attempts will be redirected to Okta as the identity provider (IDP) and user will have to use their Okta credentials anyway.

If my answer helped, remember to mark it as best to increase its visibility for other members of the Okta Community who might have the same questions as you.

    Hope my answer helps!

    Him @Mihai N. (Okta, Inc.) !

Thank you for the answer, but "would" is a bit ambiguous.

Before making changes that affect dozens or hundreds of users, I would like to know for certain: will enabling Sync Password immediately override existing users' passwords, or does it only take effect on the next password change in Okta or when adding a new Okta/Google account?

PS No, we don't use SSO, at least not yet.

The passwords will be overridden, but it's not going to be immediately as you enable the feature.

The password sync is based on certain triggers which typically are unavoidable (as discussed in this article).

Adding the specifics here as well for convenience:

" In order to trigger the password sync for a user, one of these events must occur:

        • Resetting an Okta-sourced password.
        • Signing in to Okta with a password.
        • Delegated authentication sign-in to Okta. "

In addition to those, app assignment or re-assignment after you enable the sync password feature also triggers the override.

Therefore, it's possible that some users will still use the original password if none of the above events happened.

      Regards.
