zrac0 (zrac0) asked a question.

Okta for Department of Defense - Is the Okta Customer Identity for Department of Defense essentially an Auth0 instance under the hood?

As per this page - https://www.okta.com/solutions/public-sector/department-of-defense/, Okta offers Customer Identity products that are compliant with Impact Level 4 (IL4) and IL5 environments.

Also, as per this page - https://www.okta.com/free-trial/customer-identity/, Auth0 is becoming the Okta Customer Identity Cloud.

In this regard,

  • If I need Okta Customer Identity product to be used for an application that I'm building for the Department of Defense, is Okta actually providing me an instance of Auth0 that is compliant with IL4 and IL5?
  • If the above statement is true and my application is already using Auth0 as an Identity Provider(using Auth0 SDK or REST APIs), would my application continue to work with "Okta for Department of Defense" Customer Identity product, as this Customer Identity product is essentially Auth0 under the hood?

  • Hi @zrac0 (zrac0) , Thank you for reaching out to the Okta Community!

I ran this question past my colleagues and confirmed that Auth0 is not used in any IL4 or IL5 environment for DoD.

They also referenced the following article:

    https://www.okta.com/blog/2023/03/how-an-il4-identity-provider-successfully-services-il5-environments/

That being said, I recommend reaching out to https://support.auth0.com/ for Auth0 related question to take advantage of their expertise and resources.

If my answer helped, remember to mark it as best to increase its visibility for other members of the Okta Community who might have the same questions as you.

    Hope my answer helps!

Thank you, @Mihai Negoita - Okta (Okta, Inc.).

The article - https://www.okta.com/blog/2023/03/how-an-il4-identity-provider-successfully-services-il5-environments/ mentions the following:

Over the past year, Okta has worked diligently with DISA to extend our Identity-as-a-Service (IDaaS) offering to the DoD and its mission partners in an exclusive environment without pilot program approval restrictions.

IDaaS is a cloud-based Identity and Access Management (IAM) platform that provides a central management point to access other systems and applications.

      With reference to the above:

      • What exactly is the Identity-as-a-Service (IDaaS) offering - is it Okta Workforce Identity Cloud?
      • We need a Customer Identity solution for our use case. If IDaaS is Okta Workforce Identity, is there a Customer Identity product available in IDaaS?

Meanwhile, I have reached out to Okta Support to help us with this query.

      • @zrac0 (zrac0) I think the article uses the term IDaaS broadly, not as a definition to an explicit set of solutions. Similarly to what is being mentioned here: https://www.okta.com/identity-101/idaas/

It's meant to simplify the idea of leveraging a variety of Okta features or products to achieve a use case. WIC product line might work for your use case but at the same time you mentioned already working with some Auth0 integrations which could stay in play via CIC.

Unfortunately, I won't be able to assist you with a clear answer to your use case as it would be outside of my purview.

You could check in with your Okta Account Executive or Customer Success Manager to put you in touch with a consultant to go over the implementation with you. If you don't already have an account with us, you can perhaps reach out to our Okta Sales team to have one of the Sales Engineers review the matter and confirm which product would fit you best.

In the meantime, while researching this, it has come to my attention that you've also posted this question on the May 23rd AMA event page. My colleagues will be engaging additional resources which may be able to provide additional insight on that date.

        Regards.
