smmv4 (smmv4) asked a question.

Safari opening Okta links in new KIOSK window and not a new tab

Whenever Okta loads in Safari 17.1 on my work device, I am finding that the Okta links that I click open in a new Kiosk window (See this image for example https://cdn.osxdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/missing-address-bar-safari-mac.jpg) instead of a new tab like they used to. I have tried setting Safari to open pages instead of tabs always.

Thanks!

    Hi, @smmv4 (smmv4)

Thank you for posting on our Community page!

Yes, it seems to be a known issue from Safari’s part.

Here is an useful discussion on it:

Ah, thank you for updating this. 🙂 The answer from yesterday had a post that was not clear. 🙂 I guess My question is why on my Personal Mac with 17.1 I am not seeing this problem with Okta?

        Hi, @smmv4 (smmv4)

I'm sorry for the wrong link yesterday. We tried to reproduce the issue and were unable to find a workaround from our end. Best suggestion remains to reach out to their Support.

If you can't replicate it, how can one of the several people reporting this help you?

  • fymj4 (fymj4)

Is there any updates on this issue? It's been happening to me on multiple devices for at least a month. I've never had this issue with Safari + Okta or Safari in general in the past.

Glad you both chimed in today. Thought this was another discussion that went no where.

Commented on your apple discussion Devin.

Would suggest adding to the discussion from a month ago that Laura posted in her answer:

BUG Safari 17.1: Open new window instead … - Apple Community

It also hit a deadend and was just told to use the feedback assistant to post a complaint.

    Hi guys,

We have no updates either, waiting on Apple. As Shane said, I also suggest adding on the open discussion, maybe the more comments, the more urgent the resolution.

Will keep you posted here if we get any answers.

Thank you for reaching out to our Community and have a great day!

This is not acceptable. Whether it's a Safari bug, feature, or a change to the way JavaScript behaves in Safari, there must be a workaround on your end to get Safari to open in a new tab. If Apple decides to keep the behavior the same, are you going to continue to hold your breath and wait for Apple.

Sonoma 14.1.2 and Safari 17.1.2 were just released and the behavior is the same. There the behavior is also the same in the Safari 17.4 Safari Technology Preview.

The Admin button opens a new tab, why not the apps? Get your developers to fix this!

I agree that this is not acceptable, and I dispute that this is a bug in Safari. @User16594883467582706479 (Customer Support Online Experience) can you explain why you believe this is a Safari issue? What specifically is Okta doing to launch an app, and what about Safari is preventing it from working as it has always done before this bug? I am familiar with Javascript and browser events and would appreciate as much detail as you can tell us. Thank you.
