Limiting Assignments to Application

Is there any way to limit the number of user assignments to a specific application, or at least get an error message. Use case is when we have limited licenses for an application we don't want to over-assign and then be charged for licenses we didn't purchase with the specific tool.

  • Hi @JacobH.16488 (Customer) , Thank you for reaching out to the Okta Community!

Short answer: No. Okta does not keep track of down stream application license number.

Long answer: It would be up to the Service Provider to track licenses, and I've see several applications where the Provisioning task would return a failure/error stating that not enough licenses are available. This varies from app to app and would not account for apps that generate new "seats" instead of having a limited number of licenses.

That being said, custom solutions might be found. From what I understood, the O365 and Google connectors for Okta Workflows have dedicated cards to retrieve licenses, but I don't think all apps have that option and that is whole different discussion.

If my answer helped, remember to mark it as best to increase its visibility for other members of the Okta Community who might have the same questions as you.

    Hope my answer helps!
