AnthonyA.32936 (Customer) asked a question.
When I login with a bad password or invalid email address it returns a 401 with message of 'unable to sign in'. I am looking for a way to differentiate between the two errors so I can apply different actions. Is ther any way within the sign in widget to determine if the email address does not exist for the application?

Hi @AnthonyA.32936 (Customer) , Thank you for reaching out to the Okta Community!
Here are some resources that might help you out with that:
https://support.okta.com/help/s/article/How-to-customize-the-text-or-error-messages-in-the-Okta-Sign-in-Widget?language=en_US
https://help.okta.com/en-us/Content/Topics/Settings/custom-error-pages.htm
https://developer.okta.com/docs/guides/custom-error-pages/main/
( OIE ) https://help.okta.com/oie/en-us/Content/Topics/Settings/customize-access-denied-message.htm
While I understand this would make end-user's life better, I would not recommend using explicit error messages for security reasons as it would give malicious parties confirmation when they would try to breach accounts.
My advice would also be to reach out to the devforum.okta.com to take advantage of their expertise and discuss the configuration options.
While we'll do our best to answer all of your questions here, this medium is more inclined towards Okta core products and features.
If my answer helped, remember to mark it as best to increase its visibility for other members of the Okta Community who might have the same questions as you.
Hope my answer helps!
