cu0e5 (cu0e5) asked a question.

What reasons might the Okta Active Directory Agent be unable to login when installing it

We am trying to install the Okta Active Directory Agent on a virtual machine within our company. When doing so it is receiving an 'unable to sign in' message. It is expected the login is being blocked by something but we are not sure what it may be. Very willing to hear if anyone has encountered this also and resolved it. Any ideas are appreciated. Thank you.

Steps to complete:

1) Before running the install, we sign into Okta

  • This may identify an issue also
  • We are not able to sign into Okta with email and password
  • Get 'Unable to sign in' here also
  • Must sign in with 'Sign in with Google'
  • Then credentials can be entered, if required

2) Click the Download Agent button

3) Run the installer

4) Go through the wizard

5) Create or use the Okta Service Account

6) Register Okta AD Agent ( https://dev-63080786.okta.com/)

7) Okta signin screen appears

8) enter credentials, as did with original sign in

9) Receive 'Unable to sign in'

10) Also tried clicking 'Sign in with Google'

11) Get 'Can't reach the page'

Hello @cu0e5 (cu0e5) Thank you for reacting out to our Community!

Is the account used mastered by Google, maybe this is the cause of the Unable to sign in. If the account is mastered by google, you might have a different username and not email, also you might not have a password within Okta.

For reference please see this article :

    https://support.okta.com/help/s/article/PASSWORD-BASED-LOGIN-DISALLOWED?language=en_US

"Unable to sign in" is a very non specific error, I would recommend to review the System Log and see what it's recoded in the logs for the authentication login. You could be denied access because of a policy, missing MFA or maybe e network policy.

      Hi Paul.

Thank you for the quick response. Sorry I have not gotten back to you. I was away all last week.

The following is in answer to your questions. If you have any other ideas then I am happy to hear them. Thanks Paul.

Is the account used mastered by Google

      - Sorry Paul but I am not sure what you mean by this
      - We did create a Gmail account to use as our Okta account
      - Once logged into Okta, we see Okta username and Primary email as the
      same,
      mbsymantec@gmail.com
      - I tried a login to Okta with no password and that did not work either
      - I tried setting up a new account through Github (thus not Google and
Gmail) and using this but the same issue

For reference please see this article

      - I tried to rest the password once logged into Okta. However, when
clicking Edit Profile from My Settings, I get Unable to sign in. To me,
this seems to be the same issue.
      - Even though this user can log in and it shows the user as Admin, it
      can't edit anything
      - I saw another document that says to remove the workstation from the
      domain

I guess you were right Paul but I didn't understand it at the time. I guess signing on with Google is not a regular OKTA signin. Once signed in, I created a new administrator user. I was able to install the OKTA Active Directory Agent with this user. It worked fine.

@cu0e5 (cu0e5) You can open the Okta User default profile and check which it priority 1 Porfile. Where you create the new adminstrator, in Okta or google workspaces?
