I created a distribution group in AD. User then informed me they didn't want a group, they wanted a shared mailbox.
I renamed the group to 00samplename (just in case deleting wasn't simple), then deleted the group. Then I deleted the group.
I tried creating the shared mailbox, samplename. Can't do it, since group 00samplename still exists in Office365, and still has uneditable alias, samplename@company.com.
I cannot free up samplename@company.com in Office 365 since that comes from Okta. I cannot edit it in Okta since that comes from AD. I cannot edit it in AD since it's already deleted.
Very stumped by this...

Just need to do a full import, to clear out deleted groups.

You are correct, in order to update the changes, you'll need to run an import from your on-prem AD domain.
