KevinB.32647 (Contraload NV) asked a question.

MFA Options - Verify and SMS required?

We are setting up MFA for our users, OKTA verify is now required on login if not in 'our zone'. But I was wondering, couldn't find a clear answer in the documentation, what If I want to give users the choice to choose between Verify App of SMS token? Does it give a conflict if we put them both on require? Or do I have to put them both on optional?

  • Hello Kevin,

MFA uses 2 factor authentication, by default one of the is of course the password and the 2nd you can set another one at your convenience.

Now, if you have Okta Verify set up and is required and you make SMS optional, at sign in the end user will not be prompted to set up SMS. He will just approve the push notification and he is in, without seting up SMS.

If however you put them both on 'Required', at the sign in the user will be prompted and he will need to just set up SMS to be able to move forward.

The 'required' option just basically asks the user to set his SMS/security question up to be able to use it at the next sign in where, he will be able to choose what to use.

This being said, it will not give a conflict if you put them both on required, on the contrary it will give the end user more options to choose from.

In the hopes of this being helpful, I wish you all the best.

    Kind regards,

    Dorin Melnic
