Okta Certification Community Spotlight: Kartik Shah

Kartik is Director of Systems Operations at Major League Soccer, where he leads the Identity and Access Management strategy for their Okta and Auth0 platforms. He holds the Okta Certified Professional and Okta Certified Administrator credentials and is also a founding member of the Okta Certification Circle. Kartik's Road to Okta Certification

What was the specific moment or project that made you realize you needed to pursue this certification?

When I joined Major League Soccer, I was given the opportunity to lead our Identity and Access Management strategy, including our Okta and Auth0 platforms. I also work closely with our member clubs by providing guidance on identity architecture, integrations, and security best practices. As our identity environment continued to grow with more cloud applications, federation, lifecycle automation, and evolving security requirements, I wanted to make sure I had the knowledge to design those solutions the right way. Earning my Okta Professional and Okta Administrator certifications gave me the confidence to make better architectural decisions and provide stronger technical leadership across the League.

Describe your study process. What resources or hands-on experiences were most critical to your success?

The official Okta training and practice exams were a huge part of my preparation. The practice exams helped me identify the areas where I needed to spend more time so I could focus on improving my weakest subjects. The biggest advantage was being able to apply what I learned every day. I was already working on production integrations, federation, lifecycle management, and authentication projects. That hands-on experience reinforced everything I learned and made the certification process much more meaningful.

What was the most difficult technical concept to master, and how do you apply that knowledge today?

Federation was probably the most challenging concept because every organization handles trust relationships differently. At MLS, we work in a hub and spoke model with the League, our member clubs, and many technology partners. Understanding federation has helped me design secure authentication experiences while allowing each organization to manage its own identities. That knowledge has been incredibly valuable in building solutions that balance security, usability, and flexibility.

You’re Okta Certified, Now What?

How did your day-to-day work change after becoming certified?

After becoming certified, I found myself approaching problems differently. I had a much deeper understanding of the platform, which helped me design better integrations, troubleshoot issues more quickly, and make architectural decisions with greater confidence. It also allowed me to spend more time helping others. Today I work closely with technical teams, business stakeholders, and leadership to make sure our identity strategy supports both security and the needs of the business.

Can you share a specific instance where your certification opened a door to a new project, promotion, or networking opportunity?

Earning my Okta Professional and Okta Administrator certifications reinforced the trust my organization placed in me as our primary identity resource. I became the go-to person for Okta across the League and regularly work with our member clubs to help them with identity strategy, architecture, and best practices. The certifications have also helped me build relationships within the Okta community where I've had the opportunity to collaborate with other identity professionals, exchange ideas, and learn from people solving similar challenges.

What does being Okta Certified mean to you?

Being Okta and Auth0 Certified means I can provide trusted technical leadership and help build secure, scalable identity solutions that support our League, our member clubs, and the business as a whole.

How has your expertise directly benefited your organization?

Identity is much more than logging users into applications. It has become a key part of how we improve security and simplify operations. One of the projects I'm most proud of was implementing Workday driven lifecycle management. By making HR our source of truth, we automated user onboarding and offboarding, reduced manual work, improved consistency, and strengthened our security posture. I've also helped modernize our identity environment by implementing certificate based authentication, strengthening device trust, improving federation, and supporting identity governance initiatives. Another part of my role that I really enjoy is working with MLS member clubs, helping them with their identity initiatives, sharing lessons learned, and collaborating on solutions that benefit the League as a whole.

Looking Ahead

What trends do you see emerging in our industry, and how does your certified knowledge help you stay ahead?

Artificial Intelligence is changing every area of IT, and identity is no exception. We're already seeing AI improve automation, security, identity governance, and the overall user experience while also introducing new security challenges. Identity will continue to be the foundation of Zero Trust security, and staying current through certification and continuous learning helps me evaluate new technologies and make informed decisions that balance innovation with security.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who is on the fence about starting their Okta or Auth0 Certification journey?

Just get started. It can seem overwhelming when you first look at everything you need to learn, but don't let that stop you. Take it one topic at a time, use the training resources, complete the labs, and take the practice exams. Don't focus only on passing the test. Focus on learning the platform because the certification is important, but the knowledge you gain is what will help you throughout your career.

If you could have any superpower to help you in your daily technical role, what would it be and why?

I'd love to be able to upload knowledge instantly like they did in The Matrix. Imagine saying, "I know Okta Workflows," and immediately being able to build advanced automations. Technology changes so quickly that being able to learn new skills instantly would be an amazing superpower.

What is your "go-to" song when you need to focus on a complex technical problem or get motivated for a big project?

Apple's background sound, Dark Noise. It helps me block out distractions and stay focused when I'm working through a complicated problem.

What is the best (or funniest) piece of advice you have ever received in your professional career?

"Never think you're irreplaceable." At first, I thought that sounded harsh, but over time I realized it's one of the best leadership lessons I've ever received. The best engineers don't try to be the only person who knows how something works. They document their work, mentor others, and build systems that continue to succeed even when they're not there. That's something I try to practice every day.
