Paul's Road to Okta Certification

What was the specific moment or project that made you realize you needed to pursue this certification?

I started my Okta Certification journey mainly because I wanted a more flexible, remote-friendly role. At the same time, I had two close friends already working with Okta, and we turned it into a bit of a friendly challenge between us, which kept me going.

Describe your study process. What resources or hands-on experiences were most critical to your success?

My preparation was a mix of hands-on experience and self-study. Working in Okta support was the most valuable part — dealing with real issues every day helped me understand how things actually work, not just the theory.

What was the most difficult technical concept to master, and how do you apply that knowledge today?

One of the biggest challenges when I started was Active Directory and all the features around it. Working with it made me much more detail-oriented, especially when dealing with logs. That attention to detail still pays off today.

You’re Okta Certified, Now What?

How did your day-to-day work change after becoming certified?

Day-to-day work didn’t change much, but it helped calm the imposter syndrome once I proved to myself that I actually know Okta.

Can you share a specific instance where your certification opened a door to a new project, promotion, or networking opportunity?

It accelerated things over time. With the certification and hands-on experience, I started getting more opportunities and offers. It even gave me the chance to relocate and work internationally — first in Mexico, and now in Spain.

What does being Okta Certified mean to you?

Being Okta and Auth0 Certified means I can deliver better quality work and bring more credibility to what I do.

How has your expertise directly benefited your organization?

My expertise helps the business evolve by adopting new features and improving existing processes. I focus on automation-first solutions, which reduce manual effort, increase reliability, and support scalable growth.

Looking Ahead

What trends do you see emerging in our industry, and how does your certified knowledge help you stay ahead?

I see the industry moving towards more automation, stronger integrations, and identity becoming the core of security. AI is also a big shift, especially in how we handle automation, security, and user experience. Being certified helps me stay ahead by understanding new features faster and applying them in real scenarios, not just theory.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who is on the fence about starting their Okta or Auth0 Certification journey?

Just start. You’ll figure things out as you go, especially once you start dealing with real issues instead of just theory — that’s when everything starts to make sense.

Paul, Unplugged

If you could have any superpower to help you in your daily technical role, what would it be and why?

I’d want the ability to instantly generate clear documentation just by understanding a system or solution.

What is your "go-to" song when you need to focus on a complex technical problem or get motivated for a big project?

I don’t really have a specific go-to song. It usually depends on the mood or the type of work — I listen to different styles depending on what I’m doing.

What is the best (or funniest) piece of advice you have ever received in your professional career?

Get comfortable being uncomfortable, that’s where you actually learn.
