I’m excited to share our latest Member Spotlight. This series aims to highlight stand-out individuals within the Okta Community. Today, let’s dive into Aliveni Kolluru’s journey with Okta, the important lessons learned, her Okta certification journey, and some helpful tips and tricks to get the most out of the Community.

What does your typical day look like, and what is your favorite part of your job?

As a Lead Okta Engineer, my day is a blend of architecture, engineering, mentorship, and strategic problem-solving. I usually begin by reviewing operational requests, security alerts, and ongoing project updates before connecting with my engineering team to remove blockers, discuss implementation strategies, and align priorities.

A large portion of my day revolves around designing scalable Identity and Access Management (IAM) solutions that balance security, usability, and operational efficiency. I work closely with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business and compliance requirements into resilient identity architectures. On the engineering side, I spend time building advanced Okta Workflows automations, reviewing integration code, improving lifecycle governance, and developing custom access certification solutions for disconnected applications that cannot be governed through traditional federation models.

I’m also deeply invested in emerging identity trends, particularly around AI-driven identities, Non-Human Identity (NHI) governance, and Identity Security Posture Management (ISPM). Exploring how automation and AI can strengthen security while reducing administrative overhead is one of the most exciting aspects of my role.

What I enjoy most, however, is the impact. I love creating solutions that make security seamless for users while simultaneously helping my team grow technically and professionally. Watching engineers evolve, solve complex challenges confidently, and contribute innovative ideas is incredibly rewarding.

Can you tell us about your journey with Okta? What organizational challenges are you trying to solve with Okta?

My journey with Okta has been one of continuous learning, innovation, and evolution. I started by mastering the core identity fundamentals and gradually expanded into advanced architecture, automation, governance, and integration engineering. Over time, this path led me to earn four Okta certifications — Professional, Administrator, Consultant, and Developer — each strengthening a different dimension of my technical expertise.

What began as traditional identity lifecycle management eventually evolved into building enterprise-scale identity ecosystems focused on automation, governance, and proactive security. I consistently invest in upskilling to stay aligned with emerging technologies, including AI-enabled identity management. Recently, I completed the Okta for AI Agents training, which gave me deeper insight into securing autonomous systems and AI-driven workloads.

Today, I focus on solving several critical organizational challenges:

1. Governance for Disconnected Applications

Many organizations still rely on legacy or non-federated applications that operate outside standard governance frameworks. These disconnected systems often create visibility and compliance gaps. I address this by designing custom access certification processes and automation-driven remediation workflows that maintain audit integrity and enforce access accountability.

2. Managing Non-Human and AI Identities

Modern enterprises are experiencing rapid growth in service accounts, API integrations, automation workloads, and AI agents. These identities frequently hold elevated privileges without proper governance. I work on building lifecycle controls, visibility frameworks, and automated guardrails to ensure these identities are continuously monitored and securely managed.

3. Transitioning from Reactive Security to Proactive Posture Management

Traditional identity programs often rely heavily on periodic audits and manual reviews. My focus is to shift organizations toward continuous identity posture management by integrating ISPM capabilities with broader security ecosystems. This enables real-time visibility into risky permissions, admin sprawl, shadow integrations, and misconfigurations before they become security incidents.

At its core, my philosophy is simple: identity should not be a business bottleneck. When designed correctly, automation and governance can transform identity into a secure, intelligent foundation that enables innovation at scale.

What best practices could you share to help other IT admins using Okta products and solutions? What’s one pro-tip you could give someone who’s a new Okta admin?

Modern identity management extends far beyond enabling Single Sign-On and password resets. The most effective Okta administrators think strategically about automation, governance, and proactive security.

One of the most important best practices is adopting a preventative security mindset through Identity Security Posture Management (ISPM). Instead of waiting for quarterly audits or incident investigations, organizations should continuously monitor their identity environment for risks such as admin sprawl, local account bypasses, inactive privileged accounts, and unrotated API credentials. Real-time visibility dramatically reduces exposure.

Another critical focus area is comprehensive governance across both Human and Non-Human Identities. Service accounts, OAuth integrations, API tokens, and AI-driven workloads are expanding rapidly across enterprises. Every identity — whether human or machine — should have a defined lifecycle, ownership model, and least-privilege access boundary.

Automation is equally essential. Okta Workflows has become one of the most valuable tools for modern identity operations because it allows teams to orchestrate complex business and security logic without relying entirely on custom scripting. Automating repetitive provisioning tasks, remediation actions, compliance checks, and security responses significantly improves operational efficiency while reducing human error.

AI governance is another emerging priority that organizations should not overlook. AI agents and autonomous integrations are increasingly interacting with enterprise systems and sensitive data. These workloads require the same governance standards applied to employees, including visibility, access boundaries, execution controls, and rapid revocation capabilities when suspicious behavior is detected.

My biggest pro-tip for new Okta admins is this: master the System Log and Okta Expression Language (EL) before building complex solutions. The System Log provides unmatched visibility into authentication flows, policy evaluations, provisioning events, and integration failures. When paired with a strong understanding of EL, troubleshooting becomes significantly easier, and building scalable dynamic policies becomes far more intuitive. Once you truly understand how data flows through Okta, advanced automation and governance become much easier to design.

Here’s my favorite part. Let’s talk about the Okta Community. What do you enjoy most about it, and how has being able to connect with peers helped you?

What I value most about the Okta Community is the collaborative mindset and depth of real-world expertise it brings together. It’s much more than a technical forum — it’s a global network of identity professionals openly sharing practical experiences, architectural patterns, troubleshooting strategies, and innovative ideas.

Many of the most challenging identity problems cannot be solved through documentation alone. The community becomes incredibly valuable when discussing edge cases, disconnected application governance, advanced Workflows orchestration, AI integrations, or identity posture management strategies. Having access to peers who have faced similar challenges accelerates learning and often sparks entirely new approaches to solving problems.

I also appreciate how supportive and forward-thinking the community is. Identity technology is evolving rapidly, especially with the rise of AI and automation, and the Okta Community creates a space where professionals can collectively explore these shifts, validate ideas, and share lessons learned. It helps all of us innovate faster while avoiding common pitfalls.

What are the most important lessons you’ve learned (or shared) in the Okta Community?

One of the biggest lessons consistently reinforced within the Okta Community is the importance of building sustainable, scalable identity solutions rather than relying on short-term fixes.

A major takeaway is to avoid over-dependence on brittle custom scripts when robust workflow automation can standardize and simplify operations. Okta Workflows enables organizations to build transparent, maintainable automations that are easier to audit, troubleshoot, and scale across teams.

Another important lesson is that identity security must be continuous rather than periodic. Traditional access reviews alone are no longer sufficient in modern cloud environments. Continuous monitoring through identity telemetry and posture management helps organizations identify excessive privileges, risky integrations, and shadow access in real time instead of discovering them months later during audits.

The community also strongly emphasizes the importance of mastering foundational troubleshooting tools, particularly the Okta System Log and Okta Expression Language. These tools provide deep visibility into authentication behavior, policy execution, attribute mappings, and integration failures. Understanding how to interpret these signals dramatically improves both operational efficiency and engineering confidence.

Most importantly, the community continuously reinforces the idea that identity is no longer just an IT function — it has become a central pillar of enterprise security, user experience, compliance, and digital transformation.

Do you hold any Okta certification(s) or Okta Learning badges? If so, how has this elevated your professional and personal life?

Yes, I currently hold four Okta certifications — Professional, Administrator, Consultant, and Developer. Each certification strengthened a different layer of my expertise, from core administration to advanced architecture and development capabilities.

Professionally, these certifications helped validate my technical depth and strengthened my ability to lead enterprise-scale identity initiatives with greater confidence and credibility. They also encouraged me to approach identity engineering more strategically by combining governance, automation, security, and user experience into a unified framework.

What I appreciate most about the Okta Learning ecosystem is that it constantly evolves alongside the industry. Learning opportunities around AI agents, advanced automation, governance, and emerging security trends make it possible to stay aligned with the rapidly changing technology landscape. Courses such as Okta for AI Agents have been particularly valuable in understanding how identity security is expanding into autonomous and AI-driven environments.

On a personal level, continuous learning has helped me develop a mindset of curiosity and adaptability. Technology evolves quickly, and staying committed to growth keeps the work exciting, meaningful, and future-focused.

Outside of work, what do you enjoy doing?

Outside of work, I enjoy spending quality time with my family, which helps me stay grounded and balanced despite the fast-paced nature of the technology world. Family time is something I deeply value, and it gives me both perspective and energy.

I’m also passionate about Indian music, arts, and literature. Indian mythology, in particular, has always fascinated me because of its timeless storytelling, philosophy, and cultural richness. Reading and exploring these themes is both intellectually and creatively fulfilling.

On weekends, I channel my entrepreneurial side through my in-home ethnic clothing business. It is still growing, but I genuinely enjoy connecting with people, understanding their preferences, and curating styles that reflect tradition and individuality. It’s a completely different creative outlet from engineering, and that contrast makes it especially rewarding.

I also love cooking and exploring different cuisines and food cultures. For me, food is another form of creativity and connection — it brings people together and always offers something new to discover.

Thank you for sharing your professional and personal journey with us. We are grateful for your contributions, continued support, and passion for Okta.
