Patrick is a Sr. IT Systems Specialist at Lyra Health. He holds the Okta Certified Professional and Okta Certified Administrator credentials and is a founding member of the Okta Certification Circle. Keep reading to learn how getting Okta Certified gave him the confidence he needed to navigate Okta with ease and how his go-to song not only helps him focus on solving those critical Identity challenges but also represents his hometown (The Bay!).

The Road to Okta Certification

What was the specific moment or project that made you realize you needed to pursue this certification?

As Lyra Health scaled rapidly, managing our growing app ecosystem through Okta became a heavy lift. We required a more structured approach to connect multiple Okta organizations, automate lifecycle management, and secure application access. Pursuing the Okta Administrator Certification was a necessary step to master these capabilities and become a subject matter expert capable of supporting this growth.

Describe your study process. What resources or hands-on experiences were most critical to your success?

The official Okta study guide was highly effective in outlining the core concepts, ensuring I was thoroughly prepared for the exam. Additionally, the hands-on configuration practice exam was critical. It provided practical, real-world scenarios that directly translate to the configurations I manage in my daily responsibilities.

What was the most difficult technical concept to master, and how do you apply that knowledge today?

Fully comprehending the architecture of Org2Org integrations was the most demanding concept. The hub-and-spoke analogy provided a clear framework that made the architecture easier to conceptualize. I apply this directly today by managing six separate Okta instances across our production, staging, and testing environments, all systematically interconnected via Org2Org.

You’re Okta Certified, Now What?

How did your day-to-day work change after becoming certified?

The biggest shift was a massive surge in confidence. As both the company and our IT team expanded, I stopped second-guessing myself or constantly digging for external resources. Getting certified eliminated that "stuck" feeling. Now, I navigate Okta with ease, which has drastically improved my daily efficiency.

Can you share a specific instance where your certification opened a door to a new project, promotion, or networking opportunity?

The certification provided the foundational expertise needed to drive a major internal security initiative: requiring all current and future applications to integrate with Okta. Because of this standardized approach, we have successfully integrated 403 applications to date, with that number continuing to scale alongside the business.

What does being Okta Certified mean to you?

Being Okta Certified means you have a comprehensive understanding of identity and access management, which is a critical infrastructure requirement for any enterprise in 2026.

How has your expertise directly benefited your organization?

By automating our onboarding and offboarding workflows, we’ve enabled the company to seamlessly scale 2–3x in size with minimal friction. Furthermore, precise lifecycle management ensures our licensing expenditures are accurate, saving the company money. Simultaneously, our environment remains highly secure through Okta IDP enforcement of 2FA, device posture checks, and rigorous logging.

Looking Ahead

What trends do you see emerging in our industry, and how does your certified knowledge help you stay ahead?

Identity and Access Management is increasingly vital, particularly with the rapid adoption of AI and “vibecoding”. Deeply understanding scopes, tokens, and backend management is crucial for keeping pace with these evolving technologies. Certification establishes a verified baseline, ensuring IT professionals like myself approach new integrations with a security-first mindset.

What is one piece of advice you would give to someone who is on the fence about starting their Okta or Auth0 Certification journey?

Jump in! There is literally no downside to getting Okta certified. It equips you with incredibly valuable knowledge and practical, real-world experience. If you’re even slightly interested in the IAM space, it’s one of the best investments you can make in your career.

Patrick, Unplugged

What would be his ideal superpower and what song helps him sink those last minute Identity buzzer beaters at work? Keep reading to get to know Patrick on a different level.

If you could have any superpower to help you in your daily technical role, what would it be and why?

It would have to be Telepathy. In systems support, obtaining accurate and complete diagnostic details from users is often the primary challenge. Having immediate access to a user's exact context and actions would allow for much faster and more accurate troubleshooting.

What is your "go-to" song when you need to focus on a complex technical problem or get motivated for a big project?

Yay Area by E-40. Aside from it being a great reminder of where I’m from, I like to imagine that I’m at the Chase Center about to pull off some Steph Curry wizardry.

What is the best (or funniest) piece of advice you have ever received in your professional career?

"People lie; /var/logs do not."

I've heard the wildest stories from users claiming they just restarted their computers, only to check the logs and see an uptime of 30+ days. I always tell them: if you were awake for 30 days straight, you wouldn’t function right either!
