Community Enhancements: Privacy and Nickname Feature
Christina.J

In the Okta Community, we’re always looking for ways to improve your experience while prioritizing your privacy. We are excited to announce several changes to how your identity is displayed across the community, including our forums and activity feeds.

We introduced new features to give you more control over your digital footprint within the community.

What’s Changing?

Introduction of Nicknames

To provide an extra layer of privacy, we’re introducing nicknames. This will serve as your primary identifier in public areas of the community, such as Recent Activity feed and Forum discussions.

  • For Existing Users: We will perform a one-time query to ensure everyone has a unique nickname to start.
  • For New Users: We will automatically generate a unique nickname during account creation.

Privacy- First Naming (First Name, Last Initial)

We are updating how usernames are displayed across the site. Instead of showing your full name, the community will now default to your First Name and Last Initial (e.g. “Jane D.”)

Editable Profile Fields

You will have the ability to update your First Name, Last Name, and Nickname directly within your community profile. Please note that while you can see your full name, other community members will only see your Nickname or your First Name/Last Initial.

How to Create or Update Your Nickname

Here's how you can customize your identity:

  1. Log in to the Okta Community
  2. Navigate to your Profile and click Edit
  3. Locate the Nickname field
  4. Enter your desired name and click save.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will these changes affect my Salesforce org or Okta account?

No. These changes are strictly limited to the Okta Community and will not impact your Salesforce org accounts or your primary Okta identity.

Can I change my nickname more than once?

Yes, authenticated users can change their nickname and first and last name at any time.

How are duplicate names being prevented?

We have a mechanism that prevents users from saving a nickname already in use by another community member, ensuring every identity is distinct.

We’re excited to bring these improvements to you as we continue to build a more secure and personalized community.
