Back in 2021, we launched Okta Identity Engine (OIE)—our next-generation identity platform. As OIE became the standard identity solution for all new customers, we quickly began offering Okta Classic customers the opportunity to upgrade.

Since then, our mission has been clear: helping customers successfully transition to OIE and unlock its benefits. 2024 was a pivotal year for OIE upgrades, and in this blog post, we’ll reflect on our journey so far and provide insights for those who have yet to make the move. If upgrading to OIE is on your 2025 resolution list, we’re here to make the process as smooth as possible.

Since the launch of our OIE Upgrade Program, we’ve focused not just on providing a self-service upgrade tool, but also on multiple communication channels to deliver the best guidance on making the transition.

Oktane 2024

Oktane is our annual customer event and a fantastic opportunity to engage with our community. Oktane 2024, held from October 15-17 at Caesars Forum in Las Vegas, was a major event in identity and security.

The conference focused on the importance of standardization in identity security, and the OIE Upgrade Crew was there throughout the event—helping customers, addressing upgrade blockers, and giving Classic customers the final "Go" for their OIE migration.

Celebrating 2024!

In 2024, thousands of Okta orgs successfully upgraded to OIE—and we want to extend our gratitude to all our customers who continue to leverage our platform to streamline operations and enhance security. 

The power of the new platform

Software platform upgrades always bring the promise of better performance, new capabilities and new scenarios that leverage continuous innovation. Last year, we continued to see OIE adoption being driven by key use cases:

• Phishing resistant Passwordless authentication experience
• Better security and authentication assurance by leveraging advanced capabilities in Okta OIE Devices handling, using either the out of the box capabilities of Okta Verify and/or by leveraging MDM solutions as well as security tools integrations
• Better policy framework, based on assurance levels and leveraging shareable app-level policies

Furthermore, OIE unlocks new capabilities only available on the platform such as Okta Device Access (aka Desktop MFA) as well as phishing resistance for Privileged Access Management.
