Yubikey / FIDO2 Webauthn: Support for Embedded Web Browsers
Okta Classic Engine
Okta Identity Engine
Multi-Factor Authentication
Overview

Okta does not support embedded web browsers for WebAuthn-based user verification.

Yubikey/FIDO2 webauthn relies on browser-based authentication and is closely linked to the browser profile being used. This means that when authentication is performed using Yubikey or FIDO2, it is dependent on the capabilities and limitations of the web browser being used.

To enhance clarity, it is important to emphasize that WebAuthn-based authentication with YubiKey or FIDO2 requires modern web browsers that fully support WebAuthn APIs.

Okta recommends using the latest versions of supported browsers (for example, Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari) to ensure compatibility and optimal functionality.

Applies To
  • Browser-based Authentication
  • Yubikey / FIDO2 webauthn
Cause

Embedded browsers, such as those found in certain applications or devices, have inherent limitations when it comes to capturing and saving essential information required for the authentication process to function smoothly. These limitations can impact the authentication flow and result in unexpected behavior or errors.

Solution
  • Okta does not support embedded web browsers for WebAuthn-based user verification.
  • Webauthn requires a web browser, as embedded browsers do not support webauthn.
