Overview

Google Workspace import fails with the following error:

An error occurred during import

UserImportJob: Failed to download users. Json field=familyName does not exist for googleUserId=unknown

An error occurred during import

Applies To
  • Google Workspace
  • Import
  • Okta Classic Engine
  • Okta Identity Engine (OIE)
Cause

This error indicates that the familyName (Last Name) is missing for one of the users Okta is importing from Google Workspace.

Google recently introduced the general availability of "guest accounts" in Google Workspace, as referenced in this Google Workspace Blog Post.

A guest user account can be created without familyName (Last Name), which may cause the import to fail.

guest user account can be created without familyName

Solution

Follow these steps to resolve the import error:

  1. In the Google Workspace Admin Console, navigate to Directory > Guests and ensure all the guest users have a familyName (Last Name) assigned.
    • For example, if "guestuser123" was created without the familyName (Last Name), clicking the UPDATE USER button will highlight the missing field as shown below:

Update UserGuest user

  1. Once the affected guest accounts have been updated, retry the import process.
